Butane and propane extraction methods were developed and refined in the cannabis industry. When someone mentions Live Resin you can assume they are referring to cryogenic liquified petroleum gas extraction methods. We acknowledge that there are examples of Rosin Press-type sauce and diamond products, but the larger scale and higher purity obtained only through LPG extraction are worth noting. To date, there are no examples of supercritical CO2 live resin products and we expect that trend to continue largely because supercritical CO2 extraction are limited to temperatures above 31 C. In addition, cold ethanol extractions are not suitable for crystallization due to their polar character.
The important parameters to control are mainly the temperature at which the extraction occurs. Ideally, the operator wants the water frozen solid so that it is immobilized and not soluble in the cold LPG solvent that is selectively dissolving the terpenes and cannabinoids from the biomass. Most people refer to live resin extraction on 'fresh frozen' - biomass recently harvested and flash frozen. However, many individuals are making live resin-type products with dry biomass as well. There is a significant amount of terpenes lost in the drying process which can alter the flavor profile relative to the native plant.
After extracting the biomass at ultra low temperatures the extraction mother liquor is allowed to crystallize under pressure. It can take several weeks for crystals to form and the temperature has a dramatic effect on the size of the crystals. Low temperatures can cause small crystals to crash out of solution while higher temperatures cause slow and large crystals to form. A quick google search of live resin will demonstrate that most crystal growth is taking place in small vessels and as basic as a mason jar that gets periodically burped while stored in a chest freezer. That can be dangerous considering that you have a liquified gas stored in a glass container in a non compliant freezer.
